Director Plantations at National Forestry Authority (NFA)

Job Title: Director Plantations (1 Position) Re- Advertised

Responsibilities:

Plan, lead and control all plantation activities with the help of a team of plantation staff,
contractors, forest adjacent communities and other technical experts.
Initiate and pursue the development of strategies and identification of opportunities to strengthen commercial aspects in line with the Authority’s vision.
Assist in implementation of the National Tree Planting Strategy through awareness creation, integration into NFA operations and expanding partnerships.
Draw Action Plans and supervise the raising of sufficient tree seedlings for NFA plantation establishment, community tree planting programmes and sale to other interested tree growers.
Determine quantities and provide advice on sourcing tree growing materials and maintenance of tree seed stands
Manage Forest Plantation development/Afforestation/tree growing and related projects.
Promote and popularize energy reduction and efficient wood fuel production technologies.
Expansion of multiple use tree varieties in view of climate change, reduction of emissions, deforestation and degradation in addition to promotion of non-wood forestry products.
Develop strategies for networking with government, private sector and other stakeholders in the establishment and management of forest resources.
Monitor relationships with communities and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure the Authority image is upheld, risks are mitigated and relationships enhanced.

Qualifications, work experience, abilities and personal attributes:
Honours degree in Forestry, Environment or Natural Resources
Postgraduate training in relevant field is an added advantage
At least 10 years work experience in plantation forestry of which at least 5 years should be at a managerial or senior supervisory level.
Demonstrated ability to manage the comprehensive supply chain for silviculture, harvesting operations and logistics
Excellent ability to plan and execute operations according to budget, and timelines.
Proven knowledge of forest plantation investment in a complex, dynamic and successful
concern
Excellent communication skills both oral and written
High level of integrity, resilience and reliability.
Managerial skills, result oriented with proven experience in networking, resource mobilization and fund raising.
Strong Interpersonal, self-confidence, team building and organizational skills.
Should be atleast 35 years of age

Environmental Inspector Jobs at National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)

Job Summary:

The Environmental Inspector will contribute to environment management by undertaking inspections of site, factories, premises both public and private, land, water bodies and other establishments for the purpose of determining how respective activities undertaken conform to Environmental Laws and Regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop criteria and checklists of areas to be inspected and ensuring that it is discussed, agreed and implemented;
Conduct inspections of sites that have been degraded or activities that are degrading the environment with a view of monitoring trends; and recommending and taking remedial actions;
In liaison with the Senior Environmental Inspector in coordinating inspections and monitoring activities of licensed inspectors from sectoral inspections and the private sector;
Ensuring compliance with environmental laws and other guidelines;
Preparing periodic inspection reports and recommending follow-up actions;
Preparing an inventory of degraded areas from time to time indicating their degradation agents with a purpose of taking mitigation measures;
Training District Environment Officers, Environmental Inspectors and other stakeholders and also providing technical advise to the Authority on compliance with Environmental Laws and Regulations;
Carrying out any other duties assigned by the Director of the Department and Senior Environmental inspector;
Carry out other relevant responsibilities as may be assigned by Management.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The candidate should hold a Masters degree in any of the following fields: Environment and Natural Resources. Any other additional relevant qualifications are an added advantage.
At least 3 years working experience working on production processes  and systems; Environmental Inspections and auditing ,Laboratory processes, cleaner production practice as an Inspector in a related field.
Proven skills in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Environment Science will be added advantage or any other related position in an industrial production and environmentally related field.
Additional training in Environmental Monitoring or inspection discipline will also be an added advantage.

Job Summary:

The Environmental Audits and Monitoring Officer  will conduct  environmental audits of all activities that are likely to have a significant effect on the environment developing and implementing environmental audits and guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct post EIA Inspections and audits to ensure implementation of mitigation measures;
Check corporate compliance with environmental legislation and checking the accuracy of environmental  impact predications;
Verify compliance with environment regulations such as emission limits effluent standards, waste management practices and EIA Regulations;
Advise on criteria approaches , procedures and techniques in developing environmental standards;
Initiate the development of environmental standards in priority areas of concern including coordination with lead agencies and Institutions in development of environmental standards;
Develop environmental  audit protocols guidelines  and regulations in consultation with Legal Section;
Maintain a data base on audit practitioners  and audits done;
Review audits and EIA reports;
Ensure restoration and compensation of damages or liabilities  caused;
Design programs and create awareness on environmental standards;
Develop and coordinate training in environmental standards in sectoral institutions, private sector, district and lower levels;
Provide compliance assistance to the regulated communities where required;
. Maintain and check performance on environmental monitoring equipment and;
Any other relevant tasks that may be assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The applicant should hold a  Masters degree in Physical Science with specific training  in Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering;
Experience of at least five (5) years;
Knowledge of Environmental science and technology; Environmental auditing and inspection;
Knowledge on guidelines and regulation of auditing;
Good understanding of technical and environmental aspects of facility operations;
Relevant requirements on environmental laws, regulations and related documents;
Environmental management systems and standards;
Know- How of Audit procedures, processes and techniques and Industrial processes.
Proven knowledge and understanding of appropriate environmental auditing concepts, processes, systems and the role of environmental monitoring;
Ability to identify environmental pollution sources and compile relevant and appropriate information when needed;
Skills in forming partnerships and alliances with other individual and organizations to enhance performance on the job;
Able to produce reports , document actions , keep records and inform appropriate parties;
Capacity to facilitate resolution of conflict within regulated parties;
Competency in clearly expressing concepts or ideas orally and in writing;
Excellent interpersonal skills conclusive in the effective and efficient performance  of the audit such as diplomacy and the ability to listen;
The ability to reach sound judgment based on objective evidence;
Able to work under minimum supervision and meet set targets  and deadlines;
Skills of personal organization necessary in the effective and efficient performance of the audit;
Ability to understand and appropriately use information about economic and political implications of decisions and;
Good computer skills.
